RESUMO

An eight-month-old, male domestic shorthair kitten developed progressive abdominal distension over a six-week period. Abdominocentesis revealed a fluid with high protein (3.8 g/dl) and moderate cellularity. Infectious, cardiovascular, and neoplastic causes of posthepatic obstruction were ruled out. Partial obstruction and stenosis of the caudal vena cava (CVC) at the level of the diaphragm were detected on a contrast venogram. Exploratory surgery revealed a fibrous, web-like membrane at the site of obstruction. Resection of the stenotic segment of the CVC was not possible because of the junction of the left hepatic veins and CVC just caudal to the lesion. A 3 by 6-mm, oval Dacron patch graft was sutured into the venotomy site. Postoperative complications included fever and leukocytosis, eosinophilic pleural effusion, and transient congestive heart failure associated with volume overload. The cat is normal 16 months after surgery, with no recurrence of ascites. This is the first reported case of Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) in a domestic kitten. Documented herein is the first successful treatment of BCS in a small animal using a vascular, prosthetic patch graft.

RESUMO

Estrogen and progesterone receptors (ER, PR) were measured in cytosol fractions from 18 primary canine mammary carcinomas by use of biochemical assays. One or both receptors were detected (> 10 fmol/mg of cytosol protein) in 11 tumors: 5 ER and PR; 2 ER only; 4 PR only. Mean cytoplasmic receptor concentrations (fmol/mg of cytosol protein) were 22.8 +/- 2.9 (SEM) for ER and 51.0 +/- 10.3 for PR in tumors containing ER and PR, 28.8 +/- 12.1 for ER in tumors containing only ER and 13.2 +/- 1.5 for PR in tumors containing only PR. Estrogen or progesterone receptors or both were identified in 6 of 9 tubular adenocarcinomas, 4 of 5 papillary adenocarcinomas, and 1 of 1 squamous cell carcinoma. These receptors were not identified in solid carcinomas (n = 2) or a single spindle cell carcinoma. Although the number of cases was limited, survival times of dogs tended to be longest in those with tumors containing ER alone or in combination with PR, intermediate in those with tumors containing only PR, and shortest in those with tumors without ER or PR. A correlation was not apparent between receptor status and age, presence of ovaries, tumor size, or histologic classification of the tumor. In the analysis of this series, the extent of surgery (mastectomy of the involved gland vs unilateral or bilateral mastectomy) did not appear to influence the outcome of the disease, and metastasis to regional lymph nodes did not appear to be a reliable prognostic indicator.

RESUMO

Myelophthisic pancytopenia was diagnosed in a 10-year-old pony mare with a history of recurring colic and anemia. Physical findings were unremarkable, with the exception of pale mucous membranes. Hematologic analysis revealed nonregenerative pancytopenia. Testing for equine infectious anemia and antiglobulin (Coombs) yielded negative results. The mare was treated with antibiotics, boldenone undecylenate, and corticosteroids, but a regenerative bone marrow response was not seen. Postmortem examination revealed severe myelofibrosis and multiple sites of extramedullary hematopoiesis. Myelophthisic pancytopenia develops when a space-occupying lesion destroys sufficient bone marrow or disturbs marrow architecture, resulting in decreased production capacity. Pancytopenia in the pony of this report resulted from inadequate production of blood cellular components secondary to replacement of the bone marrow by myelofibrosis. Cause of the myelofibrosis was not identified.

RESUMO

Twenty-two Hereford heifers were injected IM with prostaglandin F2 alpha a, 11 days apart to synchronize estrous cycles. Twelve of 14 heifers that had signs of estrus were inoculated IV with 1 of 3 modified-live infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus vaccines, and 2 were assigned to a nonvaccinated control group. Also, 6 of the 8 anestrous heifers were inoculated IV with 1 of the 3 vaccines on the fourth day after the last prostaglandin injection and the other 2 were assigned to the nonvaccinated group. Vaccine virus was isolated from the blood and nasal and vaginal secretions from the vaccinated heifers on postvaccination days 4, 7, and 9. On postvaccination day 9, all heifers were ovariectomized and ovarian tissues were processed for virus isolation and histologic examination. Vaccine virus was isolation and histologic examination. Vaccine virus was isolated from ovarian tissues of some heifers in each of the vaccine groups. Necrotic oophoritis characterized by multifocal areas of ovarian tissue necrosis, hemorrhage, and mononuclear lymphocytic infiltration was observed. The corpora lutea and surrounding ovarian tissues taken from vaccinated heifers in each group had varying amounts of necrotic and inflammatory change, but the changes appeared to be more severe in 1 group than in the other 2. Virus also was isolated from 2 of the controls; these heifers apparently became infected with vaccine virus that had been excreted from the vaccinated animals.

RESUMO

Previous studies have shown implantable ferromagnetic thermoseeds to be a promising hyperthermia method. However, migration from the implant site and chemical toxicity caused by corrosion of the thermoseed alloy have proven to be potential hazards. These problems could be overcome by placing the thermoseeds into removable catheters similar to those used for afterloading interstitial brachytherapy. As an additional merit, the method would allow convenient combination of heat and radiation therapy. To test the clinical performance of this method, we compared temperature distributions and biologic effects in canine muscle and transmissible venereal tumors for bare thermoseeds and thermoseeds contained within catheters. We found no significant difference in the heating patterns and similar tissue changes when all implants were removed immediately after heating. More severe tissue changes were present around bare thermoseeds that were retained. This suggests that catheters provide a safe and reliable method for thermoseed hyperthermia which would allow convenient combination with interstitial radiation.

RESUMO

Twenty-one of 24 adult male and female cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis ibis) collected in Geneva County, Alabama had numerous white cyst-like structures (1,466 microns X 354 microns) found within the loose connective tissues of the skeletal muscles of the inguinal region, beneath the serosa of the proventriculus and in the heart beneath the epicardium (one adult male bird). These were identified as hypopi of Hypodectes (Hypodectoides) propus bulbuci. Histologic sections were prepared from the subcutis, proventriculus and heart. The histopathologic changes consisted of cross sections of mites surrounded by macrophages often containing basophilic or clear intracytoplasmic vacuoles and by plasma cells. A minimal fibrous encapsulation was rarely seen surrounding the mites.

RESUMO

Myeloencephalopathy with diffuse Rosenthal fiber formation (Alexander's disease) was detected in a 9-month-old Scottish Terrier with progressive tetraparesis. Additional abnormalities included an electroencephalogram characteristic of an encephalopathy and a narrowed intervertebral disk space at C2-3. The diagnosis of Alexander's disease is uncommon in human and veterinary medicine. Results from this case and previous reports suggest that this disease in the dog may have a congenital or genetic basis.

RESUMO

Six canine mammary tumor cell lines (5 epithelial, 1 myoepithelial) were established from dogs with spontaneous mammary carcinomas. The cells were characterized for features of morphology and growth patterns on plastic, ultrastructure, cloning efficiency in soft agar, tumorigenicity in athymic nude mice, and hormonal receptor status. Biologic properties of the cell lines were distinct and preserved during long-term culture in vitro. All cell lines were clonogenic, 5 of 6 were tumorigenic, and 3 of 5 were receptor positive for estrogen and/or progesterone.

RESUMO

Diffuse degenerative myeloencephalopathy resembling Alexander's disease in a tetraparetic 9-month-old Scottish terrier dog is described. There were widespread deposits of Rosenthal fibers throughout brain and spinal cord in subpial, subependymal, perivascular and white matter regions. A diffuse proliferation of pleomorphic astrocytes in the white matter and subependymal areas was also seen. Demyelination was not a salient feature of the disease.

RESUMO

Of 172 beagle dogs administered investigational oral contraceptive steroids for 2.4-5.2 years, 9 developed malignant mammary tumors. At necropsy their ages varied from 41 to 70 months, with a mean age of 4.9 years. The malignant tumors were observed in 1 dog that received ethynerone plus mestranol at 1.05 mg/kg/day and in 4 dogs that received chlorethynyl norgestrel plus mestranol at 1.05 mg/kg/day. Also, 4 dogs that received anagestone acetate plus mestranol at either 0.44 or 1.10 mg/kg/day developed malignant mammary tumors. Malignant tumors were not seen in 33 dogs administered mestranol at 0.02 and 0.05 mg/kg/day for 7 years or in 18 dogs given ethynerone without mestranol at 1.00 mg/kg/day for 5 years. No malignant tumors were observed in 18 control dogs maintained for 7 years without treatment. Three dogs had single malignant mammary nodules, 3 dogs had 2 malignant nodules, 2 dogs had 4-6 malignant nodules, and 1 dog in the treatment group given high dosages of ethynerone plus mestranol had 14 mammary nodules composed of fibrosarcoma. The malignant tumors were histologically classified as 5 anaplastic carcinomas, 2 solid carcinomas, 1 tubular adenocarcinoma, 1 squamous cell carcinoma, and 1 fibrosarcoma. Most dogs had only 1 histologic type of cancer (8/9 dogs); however, 1 dog had carcinomas of both solid and anaplastic types involving different glands. Metastases were present in 5 dogs and most often involved regional lymph nodes and lung.

RESUMO

Aging rhesus monkeys, both controls and those undergoing long-term administration of investigational oral contraceptive steroids, developed widespread hyperfluorescent dots at the posterior pole. The dots were considered to represent drusen. Histologic (including electron microscopic) study showed the "drusen" in some of the animals to be almost exclusively pigment epithelial windows produced by a lipoidal degeneration of the pigment epithelial cells. The experiment provided a fortuitous model for direct correlation of clinical and histologic observations of myriad uniform, tiny, depigmented, hyperfluorescent, nonleaking spots at the level of the retinal pigment epithelium.

RESUMO

Of 172 beagle dogs administered oral contraceptive steroids for 5-7 years, 114 developed 1,156 nodules in the mammary gland region. Most of these nodules arose 2.5-3.5 years after initiation of treatment. Approximately 16% of the nodules were transient and disappeared spontaneously from the mammary gland during the study. A total of 925 nodules were present in 99 dogs at the time of death or necropsy. These nodules were classified as benign mammary dysplasias (7.0%), lobular or intraductal hyperplasias (31.4%), simple adenomas (20.8%), complex adenomas (25.4%), benign mixed tumors (5.3%), malignant tumors (3.6%), or nonmammary lesions (6.5%). Histologically, the mammary nodules were representative primarily of the hyperplasias and tumors that occur spontaneously in the mammary glands of the dog. The only major exception was the presence of 82 simple adenomas that had basaloid features. Most of the contraceptive-related mammary nodules developed in dogs receiving the combination of progestion and mestranol at 10 or 25 times the proposed human dosage. Control dogs and dogs receiving mestrenol alone had few mammary nodules. Combinations of anagestone acetate and mestranol and chloroethynyl norgestrel (WY-4355) and mestranol produced large numbers of nodules at 10 and 25 times the proposed human dosage, whereas ethynerone plus mestranol produced large numbers of nodules only at 25 times the proposed human dosage. Ethynerone, when given alone at 25 times the proposed human dosage, was associated with fewer mammary nodules. Malignant neoplasms were seen in dogs given 10 and 25 times the proposed human dosage of anagestone acetate plus mestranol and 25 times the proposed human dosage of WY-4355 plus mestranol and ethynerone plus mestranol. This study strongly associates certain combinations of progestin and mestranol with mammary neoplasia in dogs.
